Storm Warning -Brian W Matthews, Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Wildlife Photographer of the Year -Natural History Museum London

The world's most prestigious natural history photography competition, run by the Natural History Museum in London since 1965. Tens of thousands of entries from photographers across the globe, judged by some of the world's top experts.

Three times I've made it all the way to the winning stages - into the final 100 images from 60,000 entries, published in the official book and exhibited at the Natural History Museum and selected galleries around the world. It's pretty much impossible to get through. You need a strong image, a compelling story, and a bit of luck as your work goes through the judging process. Each of my entries reflects hundreds of days in the field, thousands of shots and working alongside some of the best guides and conservationists in the world.

Storm Warning
Caught in a freak super-storm off the Hebrides during the record UK heatwave of 2022. Storm Warning was selected for the Natural History Museum's WPY exhibition and then chosen specifically to represent British wildlife at COP28 in Dubai, exhibited at the GREAT Britain pavilion alongside world leaders and delegates from 130 nations. The image was used to illustrate the direct impact of climate change on British wildlife and the natural world.

Borneo Baby
I was working with orangutan researchers in Tanjung Puting, photographing wild orangutans in the rainforest. The mother was used to the researchers and comfortable being watched from about five metres away. Her baby daughter was on her back as they passed by. I got a sequence of five shots and this was the very last one. When the baby stuck its tongue out and scrunched up its face, it was impossible not to be reminded of a human baby. That expression always makes me smile.

Getting Stuck In
I was looking for jaguars along the Cuiaba River in the Pantanal when I noticed black vultures circling. Moving downriver to where they'd landed, I found the attraction - a spectacled caiman carcass. They'd already started on the eyes, digging down through the sockets to the meat inside. I lay on the muddy bank, eye-to-eye with the scavengers. The early morning light was beautifully soft. The smell was truly terrible.

Conservation Work & Charity Partnerships

Photography can do more than fill a magazine page. I've worked with some brilliant organisations using images to raise awareness and funds for wildlife protection.

Orangutan Foundation UK
Orangutan Foundation UK
I spent a few weeks in Borneo working across several Orangutan Foundation UK projects - including time at Camp Leakey in Tanjung Puting National Park and at the Lamandau Wildlife Reserve, one of the most important orangutan reintroduction sites in the world. While I was out there, a rescued orangutan was named after me. We also released Bruno, a sun bear who'd been rescued from captivity, back into the forest at Lamandau. The work documented how the Foundation supports local communities, manages protected habitat and gives rescued animals a route back to the wild. I'm one of the photographers in their book The Orangutan's World, with limited edition signed prints sold to raise funds for the Foundation.
National Trust for Scotland
National Trust for Scotland
Working with the National Trust for Scotland across some of Scotland's most remote places. Camping on Staffa to document the seabird colonies, searching for rare Scotch Burnet Moths on The Burg on Mull, and sailing out to St Kilda to stay for a week in one of the original houses on Village Street - participating in annual bird counts, petrel conservation work and puffin food surveys. Also found the UK's only known resident snowy owl, Snedge, on St Kilda.
The Wildlife Trusts
Wildlife Trusts
The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales manages Skomer and Skokholm, two of the most important seabird colonies in Britain. I've spent around three weeks across both islands: a week on Skokholm in May and another in June last year, plus around ten days on Skomer over several previous seasons. The work documents all the wildlife on the islands, including puffins and Manx shearwaters, alongside the conservation effort that makes those colonies possible. Images from the project have been used in campaigns and publications supporting biodiversity and habitat restoration across the UK.
COP28 UAE GREAT Britain Campaign
COP28 -GREAT Britain Pavilion
Working with the UK team, we brought together the Natural History Museum and COP28 to exhibit Wildlife Photographer of the Year images at the GREAT Britain Pavilion in Dubai, including Storm Warning, showing the impact of climate change on British wildlife. COP28 delivered the landmark UAE Consensus, the first global agreement to call for a transition away from fossil fuels, a $700 million Loss and Damage Fund, and commitments from 130 nations to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.
